A day at the races....

I haven't talked of Australian habits for a while and i think that today is the right date to start again. It's my first time in Melbourne for the "Melbourne cup".

The Melbourne Cup is Australia's major annual thoroughbred horse race. Billed as The race that stops a nation, it is for three-year-old horses and over, and covers a distance of 3,200 metres. It is generally regarded as the most prestigious "two-mile" handicap in the world. The event is held on the first Tuesday in November by the Victoria racing club, on the Flemington racecourse in Melbourne.
It is a public holiday in Victoria but celebrations are held all over Australia, everybody stops for few hours to watch the race, summer is about to kick off and people is just sitting outside having drinks with friends or families betting on the horses, waiting for the race and keep partying afterwards all night.

For the occasion women dress up pretty fancy and wear beautiful hats (they remind me a british wedding).
I spent the day at a mate's place having a "barbi" ( barbecue) and "stubbies" (beers)...Trying to use Australian slang ;-)...We bet on the horses and i won!!! Just the 3rd place!

Non ho parlato di tradizioni Australiane da un po e penso che oggi sia il momento giusto per ricominciare. Era la mia prima volta a Melbourne per la “Melbourne cup”.

La Melbourne cup é la più grande ed importante corsa di cavalli dell’anno. Titolata come « la corsa che ferma una nazione », alla corsa partecipano cavalli di età superiore ai 3 anni e copre la distanza di 3.200 metri. É la corsa più prestigiosa sulle « 2 miglia » al mondo. L’evento si celebra il primo martedí di novembre al Victoria racing club, ippodromo di Flemington a Melbourne.

É un giorno di vacanza in Victoria ma viene celebrato in tutta l’Australia, tutti si fermano per alcune ore per guardare la corsa, l’estate sta per cominciare e la gente sta all’aperto a bere con amici e famiglie scommettendo sui cavalli, aspettando l’inizio della corsa e continuando a far festa dopo, per tutta la notte.
Per l’occasione le donne vestono abbastanza eleganti, indossano bei capelli (mi ricordano i matrimoni Inglesi).

Ho trascorso la giornata a casa di un amico, barbecue e birre. Abbiamo scommesso sui cavalli e ho vinto !!! Solo il terzo posto ;-)

Just got back from one of the most amazing adventures here in Australia.
A long trip thru the Australian outback, started in Brisbane then Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Byron Bay. Flew to Darwin and after a crazy night with the locals we left thus the National park of Kakadu. Drove all the way down to Alice Springs (2.500k thru the desert) and ended up in Ayers Rock.
Unforgettable trip with my cousin Totó and Francesca.
We met a lot of travel-mates on the way, unfortunately not many Australians beyond retired people. Lots of Europeans tho, Germans, Spanish,French...Everybody in a good mood respecting the amazing environment.

Siamo appena tornati da una delle più belle avventure che ho vissuto qui in Australia. Un lungo viaggio attraverso l'entro terra Australiano, partiti da Brisbane, la Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Byron Bay. Volato fino a Darwin e dopo una notte folle con gente del posto siamo partiti per il parco Nazionale di Kakadu. Guidato giu fino ad Alice Springs (2.500Km nel deserto) arrivati fino ad Ayers Rock. Un viaggio indimenticabile in compagnia di mio cugino Totó e Francesca. Abbiamo incontrato tanti compagni di viaggio lungo il cammino, sfortunatamente non molti Australiani oltre i pensionati ;-). Tanti Europei, Tedeschi, Francesi, Spagnoli...Tutti di buon umore e nel rispetto dell'incantevole paesaggio.





This place seems to be stuck to the prehistorical age...With his virgin wild nature, natural fresh water pools filled with salt water crocodiles :-o, thousands of birds, Kangaroos and dingos.
It is aboriginal land, we saw a lot of them along the way living their lives at the age of reality for us occidentals. I envied them so much...They are free

In questo posto sembra che il tempo si sia fermato all'era preistorica...Con la sua natura vergine, laghi d'acqua dolce pieni di coccodrilli :-o, migliaia di uccelli, canguri e cani Dingo.
É una terra aborigena, ne abbiamo visti tanti vivendo la loro vita al limite della realtà per noi occidentali, li ho invidiati cosí tanto...Sono liberi!!!

Driving thru the desert can be awesome for the first few hours, then it becomes boring, we felt like driving thru the same picture for hours and hours. We stopped in unreal petrol stations in the middle of nowhere.

Guidare attraverso il deserto puó essere interessante durante le prime ore, poi diventa decisamente noioso, sembra di guidare per ore ed ore attraverso lo stesso fotogramma. Ci fermavamo in stazioni di servizio incredibili nel mezzo del niente.

Brisbane...Au revoir....

The time to say goodbye to Brisbane has come.....
The head office of the company i work for is in Melbourne and i' ve been offered a new position and a relocation of course!

I been struggling for many weeks till i took the decision: move to Melbourne!
It is a great city and a great career opportunity for me but....How about my beloved friends and sunshine???

I will miss 'm so much but this the choice i've taken and that i have to get along with.

I shouldn' t complain or be sad i know....I am just a bit tired of moving from a city to another one every 6 months.

I am sure it will be a great experience and of course i'll keep you posted!
